Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia Awareness threatened! Please help!

An organization has filed to own the phrase "Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia Awareness".

This means that no one, no CDH family, no other organization would be able to use this phrase to raise awareness or help CDH babies while this organization would be sole owner to use awareness of this birth defect as a marketing tool. No one should own awareness of a birth defect that hurts 1600 babies a year in the U.S. and kills 800 of them. We are petitioning this with the U.S. Patent & Copyright office and need your help. Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia Research

Our research site programming starts in August. I am so excited about that, maybe even more excited than I am about the events. I love that so much support and information is at CHERUBS... 13 years of doing that, we're pretty good at it! But no one is really doing the research on CDH that needs to be done. And no one has the database that CHERUBS has. Finally all this data will be used to actually make a real difference in the fight against CDH. We will be doing something proactive against CDH. Raising awareness is wonderful - the end result should be more attention to CDH and in turn, more research. We're going straight to research. Many doctors and hospitals will be working with us, the CDH Study Group and CHERUBS have been working together for years - we're taking it to a whole new level. All CDH families will be able to participate. We can all work together to find the cause and prevention and best treatment of CDH.

2008 CDH Conference, Angel Ball & Golf Tournament in NC

Hi Everyone,

I know I haven't been on the boards very much lately but we are so busy behind the scenes, getting so much done! I am so excited about all of this. If you can attend all or any of these events, please do!!!! A few updates on the big events...


CHERUBS Conference - We have 3 very impressive guestspeakers and hopefully a 4th that will be presenting speeches on CDH and Genetics, the NICU experience and more. We are working on the itinerary, round table discussion topics and discussion leaders. There will be entertainment for the kids and a pizza party. CHERUBS 2008 International Member Conference will be educational and fun! The new conference site will be public shortly! http://www.cdhsupport.org/events/conference






Angel Ball - After a rough start (2 Event Planners quitting!), the ball is rolling. The venue is just absolutely gorgeous! Duke Gardens is amazing and we will have use of the ballroom, outdoor amphitheater and one of the gardens. We have an amazing corporate event planning company helping us. One of the best marketing firms has just come aboard - some their other clients are Duke University, McDonald's, Michael Jordan.... this is HUGE!!!! The band is incredible and well known locally. Our MC is a very well-known local radio DJ with a very popular morning show. We have several caterers on board offering an "Angelic Taste of the Triangle" - the "Triangle" is what we call the Durham / Raleigh / Chapel Hill area. A wonderful florist is doing the centerpieces. We have some incredible auction items, including baskets donated by some of you! We also have some great vacations (hotel in NYC, Hawaiin vacation, spa weekend in Asheville), author Dean Koontz has donated his latest book with a special personalized inscription for the event, some beautiful artwork, gorgeous jewelry and much more. Photographers will be everywhere taking photos of the guests and the events. Videographers will be filming the event for YouTube. The media has been invited to attend as well. Several local pageant winners will be in attendance to help out. There will be a display about CDH and CHERUBS and the videos of our cherubs. Golf Tournament - This is becoming such an amazing event too! Brier Creek Country Club is gorgeous and an Arnold Palmer course. The local dealership just added a BRAND NEW 2008 LEXUS as the hole-in-one prize. We have several locals PGA players coming aboard, including long-distance drive champion Eric Lastowka. The Carolina Panthers, Green Bay Packers and other teams have donated items. Miss North Carolina will present trophies to the winners. Several local pageant winners will be in attendance to help out. Photographers will also be there and a videographer as well. http://www.cherubsgolftournament.org

To make it all even better - except for the venue's and a few things we got at huge discounts, almost everything has been donated!!!!

And the BEST part .... CDH Awareness on a level it's never been before!!!! .... and this is just the tip of the iceberg!!!!!

We still have a lot of work to do in the next 6 weeks (6 weeks! Yikes!) but we have such an amazing group of volunteers here and locally!

Auction Baskets Needed for Angel Ball & Golf Tournament

You can donate a basket in honor or in memory of your child (or any other family member - they do not have to be a cherub) at our auctions at our Angel Ball and our Golf Tournament in July in North Carolina. This is a great way to be a part of these events if you can't attend or to remember your cherub's birthday or to just help out a great cause!

To participate all you have to do is put together a basket with a theme... any theme (rated PG and under of course). The only requirement is that it is nice, new items and valued at over $100. We prefer them all wrapped up with a bow, ready for auction and ask that you include a list of what's included (so we don't have to unwrap the basket).

You can get family and friends and local businesses (especially tourist bureaus and chambers of commerce) to donate items for the basket.

Examples for baskets...

- Hawaiin Theme (a travel agency is donating a trip to Hawaii, the basket includes the trip tickets, info, sunscreen, sunglasses, maps, etc)

- Disney Theme (you could include gift cards to the Disney Store or tickets to one of the parks, Mickey Mouse ears hats, figurines, framed cartoons, etc)

- Car Theme (you could include gas cards, keychain, car cleaning kit, tools, maps, etc)

- Photography Theme (you could include a digital camera, memory card, gift certificate to have prints made, picture frames, photo album, etc)

- Sports Team Theme (hat and jersey of your team, tickets to a game, autographed photos of some of the players, sports equipment, game pennant, etc)

You can include a short story about your child, their photo, a letter on why you're supporting CHERUBS. You can make the theme about your child (nursery theme or where you're from, etc). Photos of the baskets, along with a paragraph about your cherub will be posted to the site. Make sure to e-mail us that paragraph and a photo.

Donations are tax-deductible (make sure to include donor info with the basket). And please make sure to include your info so we know who the basket is in honor or in memory of!

We need to start getting baskets in. These events are to raise money for next year's conference for families of children born with Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia. For a lot of families this will be the first time they will get to meet other CDH parents and to learn about CDH. We do not charge members to attend, instead we hold fundraisers to cover the cost. Don't forget that we also have a conference this July in NC for CHERUBS Members. Info on everything can be found at http://www.cdhsupport.org
