Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia Totebag Drive

http://www.facebook.com/events/325863927448898/

CHERUBS H.O.P.E. (Helping Other Parents Expecting) Totebag Program assists families expecting babies born with Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia by providing them with much needed free information and support items through a community project in which all CDH families can participate and honor their children while helping new families affected by Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia.

Donated items are collected by our members, CDH families and friends and put together into totebags by volunteers. Totebags are then mailed to families who are expecting babies born with CDH or who have newborns still hospitalized and battling Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia.

Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH) is a devastating birth defect that affects 1 in every 2500 babies. CDH occurs when the diaphragm fails to fully form, allowing abdominal organs into the chest cavity and preventing lung growth. The cause is not known.

50% of babies diagnosed with CDH do not survive. Of those that do survive, sometimes long hospitalizations and other issues occur. It is incredibly important for CDH families to have accurate information of all the treatments for Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia so that parents can make informed decisions for the babies' care. Items included are a CDH Awareness Ribbon totebag, personal care items for baby and information for the parents and family. Our CDH Baby Book is over 200 pages of valuable CDH information and advice.

Over 100 new and expectant CDH parents join CHERUBS each year. This project was created for them, to help them through the first few weeks and months in dealing with Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia.

These bags will ONLY go to families affected by Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia. They are sent only to expectant moms and those with newborns under 3 months old as these items are meant to be used during neonatal hospitalization.

They will be sent out to families in the United States & the United Kingdom as they join CHERUBS membership. We hope to add more countries soon, as our International Representatives take on this project in their countries.

For more information on CDH and CHERUBS, you can visit our site at http://www.cdhsupport.org/

Projects, Webpages, FB and Blogs

We have been BUSY at CHERUBS!  Aren't we always?  :)    We always have tons of projects going on and going in a million directions at once!  But it's all worth it to provide all the services that we do!  :)

To keep everyone updated on what's going on at CHERUBS with various projects, we have several different blogs and FB pages, plus forums on our site as well!   Not to mention web sites too!   We are slowing growing and going through each project or service and updating the web with news.  Bear with us as do this, while also updating our sites.   So far, we have the following up:

CHERUBS - If you haven't seen the new site, you must go check it out.  There are 1000's of pages of Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia Research, Information, Awareness and SUPPORT!   It's a one-stop shop for all things CDH.

International CDH Conference - Our first Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia Conference happened in 2000 in Orlando.  This year, we're back to Orlando on May 13-15, 2010!   Come meet other CDH families, talk to researchers, learn about Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia, participate in round table discussions and have FUN!   We have something for all CDH families - survivors and grieving!!!   This year we welcome Mass General, DHREAMS CDH Study and Sick Kids Toronto as guest speakers!   And we happen to be near the happiest place on earth - Disney World!!  :)

Save the Cherubs Campaign - Our new 2010 CDH Awareness Campaign!   We have over 20 models currently taking shoots and plan to have over 100 CDH families participating by the end of the year.  With flyers, posters, billboards and newspaper articles and tv interviews, that's A LOT of awareness!!!!   Our goal is to Save the Cherubs and spread awareness to promote resesearch to save the lives of babies born with CDH!

CDH HOPE Totebag Project - Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia H.O.P.E. (Helping Other Parents Expecting) Tote Bag Project.   Our project has reached over 100 CDH families since September!   This national project includes donations from CDH families to CDH families, making it truly a joint effort helping Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia families.

CHERUBS Angel Ball - October 30, 2010 at the Hilton Durham in Durham, North Carolina.  Celebrity guests, local radio star MC, live band, casino, silent auction and more at this year's "Masquerading Angels" Ball!

CHERUBS HOPE Totebag Project Delivers 1st Totebag to CDH Family

Our CHERUBS HOPE (Helping Other Parents Expecting) Totebag Project delivered our first tote bag in person on October 19th.

Dawn had the absolute pleasure of meeting the Hobbs family at Duke. Cherub Andrew is there fighting Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia and on ECMO. He is absolutely adorable and such a little fighter moving his hands and feet and eyes while sedated! His wonderful parents, Gene and Becky, are so sweet and we hope to get to know them and watch Andrew grow. Thank you so much for letting us welcome your little guy into the world and welcome you into CHERUBS!

In all, we have delivered and mailed out 24 totebags to new and expectant CDH families so far! It's taken 2 years, a lot hard work, a lot of donations and a huge community effort by all CHERUBS members to get this project finally going and these bags finally mailed out and we are so very, very proud of how all of our members have worked together to help new CDH families!

So many CDH families have done so much to help this project without any desire for recognition, any need to put their own cherubs on pedastals or any other motives other that to help other CDH families. Their hearts only focused on giving and helping others.... there is no higher generousity than that!

"Everyone working as a team - together - CDH families helping other CDH families. That's the true spirit of the CDH community and I am so proud to know each one of you!! Your kindness and selflessness is so deeply appreciated and admired and all your work and love will pour out in this bags to help so many CDH families! Thank you!

THIS is why CHERUBS exist! This is what we're here for, why it was created, what our mission is. Days like today remind me of that. Just to see that beautiful little fellow fighting CDH and to try to let a family know that they aren't alone and to hopefully give them information and support. This is why we exist. I am so proud of our members" - Dawn Williamson, President & Founder of CHERUBS

CHERUBS HOPE Totebag Project Blankets

We are busy, busy, busy as bees working on this project and it's almost ready to start! We do have a few problems and need some help!

1. We still need some items. Especially disposable cameras, handprint and footprint kits, 3 ring binders and teddy bears. The list is below. Please see if you can help out some CDH families.

2. When we took this project over from the originator it was a bit disorganized. We have no idea who donated what items! Below are photos of blankets, please help us to identify them at http://www.cdhsupport.org/members/viewtopic.php?t=3350&highlight= We'll post the other items in that forum as well.

We are going to label each item donated for the totebags. So much love and time went into them, the recipients should know that other CDH parents donated these things!

We have absolutely no idea who donated what. So we need your help please. If you donated any of these blankets, please let us know!

I apologize for the photos - they don't do these beautiful blankets justice at all!

CDH Fundraisers

Lots of different fundraisers for CDH going on.... how many groups are doing "Change for CDH" around Halloween like the Trick-or-Treat for CDH stuff we've posted for years and the "Change for CDH" we posted about 2 months ago?
And how many... groups are now doing totebags for the same CDH families?
How do we collaborate it all instead of needless competition?
That's a lot of the same services and ideas being done when we need so many other things for CDH families that aren't already being done.

Ideas? Suggestions?

The whole CDH community should be working as a team to provide the absolutely best and most original and different services for CDH families by using original and different ideas and fundraisers and sponsors.

There can never be enough CDH awareness, research or support for the half million families affected since 2000.

Some of the services, fundraisers and events offered -

http://cdhsupport.blogspot.com/2009/07/cherubs-timeline.html

Ideas? Suggestions? Please e-mail or PM any more suggestions that you think will help CDH families!!!! But please remember that, out of respect and professionalism:

- CHERUBS does not use ideas already done by other groups
- CHERUBS does not infringe on copyrights and follows (supplemental) trademark laws
- CHERUBS does not contact other groups' sponsors, donors or spokespeople
- CHERUBS does not conduct the same fundraisers as other groups
- CHERUBS does not like to waste money offering the same services other groups are already offering
- CHERUBS has no paid employees
- CHERUBS professional services are all pro-bono (lawyers, medical advisers, web design, etc)
- CHERUBS does not receive grant funding
- CHERUBS will not use ribbons or colors used by other causes
- CHERUBS always offers original ideas and services that will benefit CDH parents
- CHERUBS does not compete over members
- CHERUBS makes every service, donation and purchase public for full disclosure of what we do and where donations go

And most importantly... CHERUBS remains ethical and works first and foremost with the entire CDH community and these babies at heart. We are not a "business", we are a charity. We do not participate, nor are we interested in, competition. Our focus is these children affected by CDH.

That said, we LOVE new ideas!!!!! But please respect other organizations, groups and causes as well. Our goal has always been for the entire CDH community to work together, with one focus.

While You're Out School Shopping...

Please consider picking up some items to donate for our CHERUBS HOPE totebags for CDH parents.

Right now a lot of the office supplies stores have great sales on 1.5" view pocket white binders - we will be using them for our CDH Baby Books and need 250 of them for the next year. Some of the stores have HUGE discounts and buy 2, get 1 free deals. They have limits on how many yone person can purchase and we could really use help getting these!

Also, we are putting in the totebags small Kleenex packages, pens, 3 ring photo sheets and small bottles of hand-santizer and lotion - these are also sold at office supply and school supply stores.

Any donation helps!!! And it is tax-deductible
